Research - Asics 'Onitsuker Tiger'

This very limited edition 'Look Book' was designed to launch Asics UK’s spring and autumn collections of Onitsuka Tiger trainers.

The brochures take influence from several Japanese themes. The main grid structure works to a standard measurement known as a 'ken' which is divided into 20 parts, termed minutes, each minute being again divided into a further 22 parts or seconds of space. Reflecting the characteristics of lightness and delicacy, the main pages are French folded 50gsm bible paper, designed to work so that the flood red inside offers a muted colour show-through effect to the page, while the white out windows frame and draw attention to the shoes themselves. Bamboo silhouettes feature strongly throughout. The flock cover, whilst emphasising the brand’s prestige, echoes the fabric that is used in part on the shoes themselves. The book is finished using a traditional hand-sewn Japanese thread binding. Finally the box that houses the books is covered with a tactile paper (complementing the flock) and has been designed to reflect the common Japanese architectural feature of projected roofs over exterior walls.
